Buy Camassia cusickii Cusick's camass bulbs: Columns of azure blue flowers

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist but well-drained, fertile, humus-rich, soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May to June
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

This is a handsome plant that can be threaded through the herbaceous border, but it also looks wonderful when planted in generous drifts in a meadow-style setting (it originates from prairies in North America). The star-shaped flowers are azure blue, and open from the base of the upright spike in late spring and early summer, and if left in the ground it will naturalise easily.

  • Garden care: Plant the bulbs 8cm deep and 20cm apart in big groups in the autumn. Try to plant them where they will remain for several years as they resent being moved. In cold areas, apply a generous layer of mulch in autumn.

  • CAUTION do not eat ornamental bulbs

Large sound bulbs for a village park. Tall and statuesque. Lovely colour.

This is a good 'do-er' in our heavy clay soil. the flowers are very attractive, lasted well, but were smaller than I had expected. I plan to move them to another site, where they will work well amongst some white Hellebores

Growing more impressive each year

Planted several of these in part of a border a couple of winters ago. Their first spring they looked fine and I didn't think much more of them, but this year they're so impressive - they've grown in number and the flowers heads are really long and healthy. Absolute delight!

so far, no naturalising!

These bulbs come early and are lovely, but they are not so great on reproducing (or something has been eating min!) The blues are more interesting that the white. Not quite the first to pop up, but certainly early in the season
