Plant description

This collection combines dark dramatic tones with softer whites, smoky apricots and rich violet-blue flowers to create a layered spring-to-early-summer display with plenty of contrast and structure. The planting moves naturally through the season, beginning with elegant tulips and scented daffodils before taller architectural flowers rise above the border later on.

There is a strong balance between light and dark throughout the mix. Near-black tulips and deep plum flower spikes are softened by creamy whites and pale lemon shades, while warmer caramel and dusky pink tones help connect the palette together. The result feels bold without becoming overpowering, especially when planted in generous drifts or repeated groups.

Height variation plays a big role in the overall effect. Lower spring bulbs create fullness at ground level, while taller camassias, fritillarias and alliums add movement and vertical interest as the season progresses. The spherical allium flowerheads and upright spires bring a more architectural finish, making the collection particularly effective in larger borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting schemes.

Fragrance, texture and long seasonal interest make this a versatile mix for both traditional and contemporary gardens. It also lends itself well to wildlife-friendly planting, with nectar-rich flowers attracting pollinators across several months.

In each collection you will receive the following bulbs:

  • 7 x Tulipa 'Paul Scherer': The blooms of Tulipa 'Paul Scherer' are large, oval, almost egg-shaped, and sit on top of a sturdy stem in late spring. Plant in bold drifts for big impact, or tone it down with silvers and pinks. This variety has been granted the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society. Grows to 50cm.

  • 7 x Tulipa 'White Prince': Classically shaped white blooms, which open from bud with the palest lemon blush, and sometimes have a faint hint of pink at their petal edges, appear early in the season. Like all the 'Prince' series tulips, they are stunning when planted en masse in borders, or used to fill pots on the patio. Also, their sturdy stems mean that they can cope with poor weather conditions better than most. Grows to 35cm.

  • 5 x Tulipa 'La Belle Époque': Initially, the flowers of this exquisite and unusual tulip are a luscious blend of rich caramel and dusky rose, but as they mature the colour evolves, seeming to change a little each day, as the rich pinkish-plum tones take on a softer, smokey apricot hue. With an impressively long blooming period and a mouthwatering colourway, there's little wonder why la belle epoque tulip has developed such a loyal fan club amongst florists and gardeners. Grows to 45cm.

  • 5 x Camassia leichtlinii subsp. suksdorfii: Loose spires of blue or lilac, star-shaped flowers appear on top of tall stems in late spring. Originally from damp meadowlands in North America, Camassia leichtlinii subsp. suksdorfii is perfect for naturalising in a wildflower meadow. This delightful bulbous perennial will also grow happily in moist soil or partial shade as long as the soil doesn't become waterlogged. Grows to 1.3m.

  • 10 x Narcissus 'Thalia': Fantastically fragrant and producing between two and four creamy white flowers on each 35-40cm tall stem, this elegant Triandrus daffodil comes highly recommended. Typically appearing from March to April, the star-shaped flowers of ‘Thalia’ are rich in pollen and nectar, and can last a week or so in the vase once cut. A boon for borders and pots, its relaxed habit enables it to settle seamlessly into naturalised planting schemes, while also being a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly, sensory or cutting gardens. Grows to 40cm.

  • 10 x Narcissus 'Sir Winston Churchill': Loose clusters of creamy-white, double flowers, each flecked with orange, top the upright stems in spring. Their enchanting, slightly ruffled appearance and sweet perfume, make them perticularly popular for cutting and adding to fresh bouquets. Grows to 40cm.

  • 15 x Leucojum aestivum: This tough and easy to grow perennial looks great when allowed to naturalise throughout mixed borders, but as it loves a touch of moisture, Leucojum aestivum also does well when planted in drifts around the upper edges of a pond. Grows to 50cm.

  • 3 x Fritillaria persica 'Ivory Bells': An unusual rarely seen cultivar that is incredibly beautiful, the flowers of Fritillaria persica 'Ivory Bells' emerge from bud a creamy green, and fade to near ivory white as they age. One of the tallest fritallaries, it can be quite imposing, and can send up a flowerspike up to 1m tall, which will usually carry 10-30 flowers. Grows to 1m.

  • 3 x Fritillaria persica: A stately species, the upright stems ofFritillaria persica can carry up to 30 pendulous, bell-shaped flowers in spring. The flower colour can vary from greenish-brown to deep purple, and they can look almost black in certain lights. This brooding colour contrasts well with silvery foliage plants, and their upright habit means they also associate well with grasses. Grows to 1m.

  • 10 x Allium hollandicum 'Purple Sensation': Probably one of the most popular of all the alliums, 'Purple Sensation' has a striking silhouette which makes them particularly well suited to gravel or prairie-style planting schemes, but they also look fab in pots or mixed borders. Grows to 80cm.

  • 10 x Allium stipitatum 'Mount Everest': Tightly packed spherical umbels of 50 or more white, star-shaped flowers appear on upright, ribbed stems in early summer, above the strap-shaped foliage, which starts to die back before the flowers emerge. 'Mount Everest' is a tall allium with an outstanding architectural form that is ideally suited to gravel gardens. Grows to 1.2m.

How to care for Lucy Willcox’s 5 months of spring bulbs bulb collection 11 varieties:

Plant bulbs as soon as possible after arrival into well-prepared, free-draining soil in a sunny position (this collection is not suitable for growing as a full mixed pot display). Water in after planting and during prolonged dry spells, particularly in the first growing season and for any bulbs in lighter or free-draining soils, and apply a balanced feed in spring to support strong flowering and bulb development.

As a general guide, plant tulips around 15-20cm (6-8in) deep, daffodils at roughly three times the height of the bulb (typically around 10-20cm / 4-8in depending on size), alliums and fritillaries around 15-20cm (6-8in) deep, camassia around 10-15cm (4-6in), and Leucojum around 10cm (4in). Space bulbs generously to allow for naturalising and seasonal spread, particularly for larger architectural types such as alliums, fritillaries and camassia.

Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering so energy can return to the bulb for the following year. Most bulbs in this collection will naturalise well in borders or meadow-style plantings, with many returning reliably each spring once established. The tulips in this collection may perform best if lifted once the foliage has died back, then dried and stored in a cool, dry place before replanting in autumn.

Please note:

This bulb dies back after flowering each year and enters a period of rest ahead of regrowth the following season.
