Plant description

Soft creamy whites, smoky apricots, deep near-black tulips and airy lilac-blue flower spikes come together in this elegant spring bulb collection. The mix has a natural, slightly relaxed feel, with the lighter tones lifting the darker flowers and creating contrast without looking harsh or overly formal.

As the season progresses, the planting develops in layers, starting with scented narcissi and richly coloured tulips before taller flowering stems rise through the display later in spring. The shifting tones of dusky rose, caramel and plum bring warmth to the scheme, while cooler whites and lilacs help keep the overall look balanced and fresh.

This collection works especially well in mixed borders with moisture-retentive soils, naturalistic planting schemes and larger drifts where the different flower shapes and heights can weave together naturally.

What's included:

In each collection you will receive the following bulbs:

  • 15 x Leucojum aestivum: This tough and easy to grow perennial looks great when allowed to naturalise throughout mixed borders, but as it loves a touch of moisture, summer snowflake also does well when planted in drifts around the upper edges of a pond. Grows to 50cm.

  • 5 x Tulipa 'La Belle Epoque': Initially, the flowers of this exquisite and unusual tulip are a luscious of rich caramel and dusky rose, but as they mature the colour evolves, seeming to change a little each day, as the rich pinkish-plum tones take on a softer, smokey apricot hue. With an impressively long blooming period and a mouthwatering colourway, there’s little wonder why la belle epoque tulip has developed such a loyal fan club amongst gardeners and florists. Grows to 45cm.

  • 7 x Tulipa 'Paul Scherer': Tulip breeders have been trying for years to cultivate a variety that produces a dark purple, almost black flower on a tall stem - and here it is! The blooms of Tulipa 'Paul Scherer' are large, oval, almost egg-shaped, and sit on top of a sturdy stem in late spring. Plant in bold drifts for big impact, or tone it down with silvers and pinks. This variety has been granted the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society. Grows to 50cm.

  • 5 x Camassia leichtlinii subsp. suksdorfii: Loose spires of blue or lilac, star-shaped flowers appear on top of tall stems in late spring. Originally from damp meadowlands in North America, Camassia leichtlinii subsp. suksdorfii is perfect for naturalising in a wildflower meadow. This delightful bulbous perennial will also grow happily in moist soil or partial shade as long as the soil doesn't become waterlogged. Grows to 1.3m.

  • 10 x Narcissus 'Sir Winston Churchill': Loose clusters of creamy-white, double flowers, each flecked with orange, top the upright stems in spring. Their enchanting, slightly ruffled appearance and sweet perfume, make them perticularly popular for cutting and adding to fresh bouquets. Grows to 40cm.

How to care for Lucy Willcox’s 5 months of spring bulbs bulb collection 5 varieties:

Plant bulbs as soon as possible after arrival into well-prepared, free-draining soil in a sunny to lightly shaded position (this collection is not suitable for growing as a full mixed pot display). Water in after planting and during prolonged dry spells, especially in the first growing season, and apply a balanced feed in spring to support strong flowering and healthy bulb development.

As a general guide, plant tulips around 15-20cm (6-8in) deep, daffodils at roughly three times the height of the bulb (typically around 10-20cm / 4-8in depending on size), camassia around 10-15cm (4-6in), and leucojum around 10cm (4in). Space bulbs generously to allow for naturalising and long-term spread, particularly for taller or more architectural varieties such as camassia.

Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering so energy can return to the bulbs for the following year. Most bulbs in this collection will naturalise well in borders and informal planting schemes, with Leucojum and Camassia especially suited to slightly moister conditions once established. The tulips in this collection may perform best if lifted once the foliage has died back, then dried and stored in a cool, dry place before replanting in autumn.

Please note:

This bulb dies back after flowering each year and enters a period of rest ahead of regrowth the following season.
