Buy Calycanthus 'Venus' Carolina allspice: An exquisite summer-flowering shrub

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This deciduous shrub is a beauty. It is a hybrid that is the result of a complex breeding programme, which has bestowed upon it the best features of all its parents. It is a strong grower and produces its large fragrant flowers over a long period from early summer. These are very beautiful, resembling slender-petalled magnolias, which open from fat buds that form along the stems. The first flush of flowers is the most impressive and will last for a few weeks, but once over, the plant will continue to bloom intermittently throughout summer and into autumn.

  • Garden care: Shelter from cold drying winds. Remove dead or damaged stems in late winter or early spring.

  • Humans/Pets: Harmful if eaten

Alive but not flourishing

I thought this had died during winter as it was slow to produce leaves this year. Some stems needed to be removed. Hasn't flowered this year, hoping it does better next year.

Just lovely

A beautiful shrub with delightful flowers but insects find it delicious and will strip the leaves, so it needs watching carefully.

Lovely shrub

I bought this as a gift for a keen gardener friend. It came well packaged and in lovely condition. My friend was very pleased but I did have to print of my own information for it/her as there was nothing on the plant and I chose it for her so she had no idea. She has put it a tub for now but may plant it into the border or the lawn, she is undecided but it could do any of these spots.

Hello there No this shrub is deciduous. Hope this helps.

Hello, Is it possible to grow this in a large pot? Say 30 litres? Thank you,

Grandma Pam

Hello, Yes it would be possible to grow this in a large pot provided it is kept well fed and watered.

Magnificent magnolias

Certain plants seem to capture the spirit of the moment and Magnolias take centre stage just when the garden is full of promise. But these plants have been on the planet since the age of the dinosaur when the earth existed as one large land mass. When con
