Plant description

Plant form and textures are celebrated in this quiet, serene woodland garden scheme. A simple yet elegant colour palette brings a restorative sense of calm. This is a wonderful planting style to suit a shady garden.

Carefully curated to deliver on style and performance, and grown to order on the Crocus nursery, our mini-border plant collections create beautiful displays that come back year after year. Comprising six, 9cm plants, the collections will typically be dispatched from late March to mid-April - perfectly timed for spring planting and robust growth.

Each collection is suited to fill a 1m sq space, and has been designed to enable you to either place them on their own, intersperse them with other plants, or weave them in multiples through your borders to create a cohesive, considered look to your garden.

What's included:

Each combination contains the following plants. They are all supplied in 9cm nursery pots:

2 x Blechnum spicant: As they age the feathery, dark green fronds of this handsome, evergreen 'hard fern' spread semi-horizontally to form an attractive, rosette-like shape. One of our recommended varieties, it provides all-year interest for shady areas of the garden and companionship for shade-loving woodland plants. Grows to 50cm.
2 x Convallaria majalis: Strongly scented, bell-shaped flowers with waxy textured petals are followed by bright red berries. These appear on slender, upright to gently arching stems, which arise from amongst the lush green foliage. Grows to 25cm.
1 x Hosta 'Devon Green': Almost exclusively shade-lovers, hostas are principally grown for their valuable foliage detail over the spring and summer months. Their planting versatility enables use as ground cover in a border, or as an understorey to shrubby plantings, or equally they make handsome specimens to grace a garden planter. Hosta 'Devon Green' is a chance sport of H. 'Halcyon', forming dense, medium sized hummocks of heart-shaped leaves. Being dark in colour, their highly glossy surface throws into relief the distinct mid rib veining. Lily-like flowers of pale lilac appear in high summer. Grows to 50cm.
1 x Rodgersia aesculifolia: Towering spikes of star-shaped, white or pink flowers on large panicles up to 60cm long in midsummer. This striking, clump-forming perennial with its horse chestnut-like leaves looks great planted in the moist margins of a stream or pond. Best grown in a sheltered, shady spot where it contrasts well with the lacy texture of ferns. Grows to 2m.

Planting tips:

Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. Where possible, plant in odd numbers, and cluster them together to give impact. Multiples of 3 work really well set out in irregular triangles for an organic feel, while larger numbers can be planted in mercurial clusters or drifts. In bigger gardens, try to repeat your clusters through the border to create a sense of rhythm and cohesion. Also, when setting your plants out, check their eventual spread and make sure they’ve enough space to fill out. After planting, keep plants well watered for their first year, particularly during warmer weather, and feed them with a good, general purpose fertiliser through the growing season.

Please note:

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
