A compact, shade-loving euphorbia that has long-lasting, acid-yellow flowers in spring that contrast beautifully with the deep purple, strappy foliage strung in whorls around stiff stems. Try it towards the front of a border, where its foliage can be appreciated, or as a groundcover for a difficult, shady site, among spring-flowering bulbs such as narcissus. In a small garden it may need checking, since it self-seeds freely.

How to care for Euphorbia amygdaloides Purpurea:
When planting, incorporate compost to improve drainage and fertility, spacing plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart and watering thoroughly for the first growing season, after which time the plant does become tolerant to dry shade. For shaded or woodland spots, plant in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil where they’ll spread to form dense groundcover.
This evergreen perennial spreads via underground rhizomes, so allow enough space for it to adequately provide ground cover.
In autumn, cut back the faded flower stems, taking care not to remove the new ones that will produce next year’s blooms. Always wear gloves when handling spurges, as the milky sap is poisonous and can cause skin irritation.
Each spring, remove any unwanted seedlings as part of your regular border maintenance to keep the plant contained and your garden tidy.
