Plant description

These eye-catching perennials have large, colourful foliage and showy summer flowers, which make them popular additions to large pots, borders and seasonal bedding schemes. They may tolerate low winter temperatures in more sheltered positions, particularly if they are planted deeply and protected with a deep autumn mulch. In cooler climates the rhizomes should be lifted after the first hard frost has blackened the foliage and stored in frost-free conditions. Voracious feeders, they should be kept well fed and watered while actively growing.

What's included:

In each collection you will receive 1 rhizome each of the following:

  • Canna 'Phasion': Each leaf is variously striped in green, purple, orange and pink, creating a dazzling effect that is further enhanced when the orange flowers appear. Spectacular in a hot-themed planting scheme, it also mixes well with plum and purple. Grows to 1.6m.

  • Canna indica 'Tropicana Gold': Golden-orange flowers top the upright stems throughout the summer, providing a magnificent contrast to the large paddle-shaped foliage, which has a network of prominent yellow veins. Perfect for adding height to the summer planting scheme. Grows to 1.6m.

  • Canna indica 'Tropicana Black': Broad, near-black foliage, which is suffused with traces of plum and red, is topped with heads of dazzling scarlet flowers that fade to orange as they age. A fine addition to summer bedding schemes, where it will create stature and drama. Grows to 1.5m.

How to care for Tropicanna Cannas:

Pot the rhizomes up into 20cm pots filled with a good quality compost. The rhizomes should be planted shallowly, just covering them with compost, but making sure that any new shoots are above soil level. Water lightly and then grow them on at temperatures above 10°C, increasing the water as they start to grow. Gradually harden off before planting out after all risk of frost has passed. Water regularly during the growing season, applying a phosphorus-rich liquid fertiliser each month. In frost-prone areas lift the rhizomes in autumn and store in a frost-free environment in barely-moist compost or leaf mould.
