Plant description

Strong structural forms always hold the eye and will help add greater interest to a mixed border. The cool tones of the flowers in this collection are also very soothing. Plant in a sunny spot and expect colour over several months from midsummer.

Carefully curated to deliver on style and performance, and grown to order on the Crocus nursery, our mini-border plant collections create beautiful displays that come back year after year. Comprising six, 9cm plants, the collections will typically be dispatched from late March to mid-April - perfectly timed for spring planting and robust growth.

Each collection is suited to fill a 1m sq space, and has been designed to enable you to either place them on their own, intersperse them with other plants, or weave them in multiples through your borders to create a cohesive, considered look to your garden.

In this collection you will receive the following plants:

2 x Verbascum phoeniceum 'Violetta': Upright stems carry whorls of dark-eyed, purple blooms above rosettes of oval-shaped, deep green leaves. As the season progresses, and as each flower fades, attractive pearl-like seed pods develop, and these ripen to burgundy black in colour. Shorter than many other mulliens (but no less showy), 'Violetta' is ideal for smaller gardens or naturalised planting schemes. Grows to 90cm.

2 x Verbena bonariensis: For several months from midsummer, the tall, upright stems of this much-loved perennial are topped with clusters of tiny lilac-purple flowers. It is ideal for adding height without density, and it makes an excellent filler in the border, because its stiff stems will help support neighbouring plants that might otherwise need staking. Verbena bonariensis also mixes well with ornamental grasses, while its nectar-rich flowers will help sustain bees and butterflies well into autumn. Grows to 2m.

1 x Agastache 'Blackadder': Hyssops are great for adding height to a border, with whorls of long-lasting, tiny flowers arranged like a bottlebrush, and pointed, aromatic fresh green leaves that are attractive to butterflies. They are short-lived though, and may need replacing every few years, especially after a cold or wet winter. 'Black Adder' has smoky, violet flowers on long spires from July to October. Try it as part of a Mediterranean scheme or in a sunny, well-drained border among ornamental grasses. Grows to 90cm.

1 x Stipa gigantea: Arching stems of glistening, golden, oat-like flowerheads above clumps of slender, grey-green leaves. This majestic semi-evergreen grass is an excellent specimen plant for a sunny, mixed or new perennial border. Use it to add stature, structure and movement. Grows to 2.5m.

Planting tips:

Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant.

Where possible, plant in odd numbers, and cluster them together to give impact. Multiples of 3 work really well set out in irregular triangles for an organic feel, while larger numbers can be planted in mercurial clusters or drifts. In bigger gardens, try to repeat your clusters through the border to create a sense of rhythm and cohesion.

Also, when setting your plants out, check their eventual spread and make sure they’ve enough space to fill out. After planting, keep plants well watered for their first year, particularly during warmer weather, and feed them with a good, general purpose fertiliser through the growing season.

Please note:

The plants in this collection will die right back in autumn, then fresh new growth will appear again in spring.
