Hanging basket plants Hi Can you advise on which plants will give a classic look in my hanging baskets? Not keen on Petunias. Would like ideally a white look, although I do like Pelargonium 'April Hamilton'. What plants would you suggest that would compliment these plants, -not after lots of different vibrant colours. Can you also suggest how many plants per basket, as I would like a good display, and have quite large wicker baskets. Many thanks Julia

Julia Moss

Hello Julia, Most of the bedding we sell comes in collections of mixed colour. We do sell however a collection of white Pelargoniums, which would look very stylish - just click on the following link to go straight to them. http://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/bedding/pelargoniums-collection-of-5-white-pelargoniums/classid.2000004680/ As for numbers, this will depend on how full you want the baskets to look and how big the baskets are. As a very general guide, I would try to plant between 5 - 9 plants in a 12" (30cm) basket. I hope this helps. Helen Plant Doctor

Hi Helen, I Ihave just placed my order as your suggestion below, looks exactly what I had in mind, but I have just read about them and all seem to be upright growing, .....with this in mind would they be suitable for hanging baskets?

Julia Moss

Hello again Julia, You can still plant the upright Geraniums in a hanging baskets, but they will look softer with something trailing around them. There isn't a trailing variety in the collection, but if you want a more cascading effect then perhaps you could also include some trailing Fuchsias http://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/bedding/fuchsia-trailing/classid.2000012484/ Best regards, Helen Plant Doctor

Ferns for a hanging baskets please Hello Crocus I have a newly refurbished South / West facing veranda on my Arts Crafts home. I would like to grow some elegant overhanging ferns in hanging baskets. There is some modest shade under the guttering / eaves and the veranda is very sheltered. Can you recommend a variety please. Thanks in anticipation Margery

Margery Meakes

Thanks Helen, I will order some from you in the next few weeks. If you can also advise on how, and in what I plant them, the best way to look after them during the growing season, and also how to overwintering. Thanks again in anticipation. Regards Margery

Hello Margery, As it spreads by rhizome, the best fern for this setting would be Polypodium vulgare - just click on the following link to go straight to it. http://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/ferns/polypodium-vulgare-/classid.1835/ I hope this helps. Helen Plant Doctor

Hello Margery, We do have advice regarding the soil type and care tips on the link I sent you. They are fully hardy so will be fine without protection in winter but will need lots of water during summer if grown in a hanging basket. Best regards, Helen Plant Doctor
