This year marks our 11th collaboration with Tom Stuart-Smith at the Chelsea Flower Show and we are delighted to bring you this selection of border combinations.

Inspired by The National Garden Scheme Garden, designed by Tom Stuart-Smith & brought to life by Crocus. Plant form and textures are celebrated in this quiet, serene woodland garden scheme. A simple yet elegant colour palette brings a restorative sense of calm. This is a wonderful planting style to suit a shady garden.

Our new mini-border collections are now available to pre-order. Grown to order on site at Crocus Nursery, our considered range of plant collections have been carefully created to deliver on style and performance in your garden. Comprising 6 9cm plants, our mini-border collections will be dispatched when the plants are ready. We expect this to be from the end of March, but it may be the beginning of April if they need a little longer.

Each collection of 6 x 9cm plants will suit a 1m sq space and is designed to be used alone, interspersed with existing plants, or used in multiples for a cohesive, considered look to your garden.

What's included:

Each combination contains the following plants. The geranium is supplied in a 2-litre pot, while all the others are supplied in 9cm pots.

Geranium pratense 'Mrs Kendall Clark': Pearl-grey, saucer-shaped flowers with pale grey stripes on the petals appear in summer among finely cut mid-green leaves. This exquisite meadow cranesbill is one of the tallest and most vigorous hardy geraniums. It is ideal for the front of a sunny border though it can also cope with a fairly shady spot. Try in a wildflower meadow too, where it can self-seed freely. Grows to 90cm.
Digitalis purpurea f albiflora: From early summer, elegant spires arise from the rosette of foliage, bearing white, tubular flowers that open from the base of the stem upwards. Ideal for adding height to a partially shaded border or woodland garden, these short-lived plants will self-seed freely in the right spot, but the resulting plants may produce purple flowers. Grows to 1.8m.
Lamprocapnos spectabilis 'Alba': Arching sprays of dainty, pure white, heart-shaped flowers appear in late spring above fern-like, fresh green leaves. Easy to grow, this elegant dicentra is ideal for illuminating a woodland garden or as part of a cottage garden scheme. As long as the ground is kept moist, 'Alba' will thrive in full sun or partial shade. It is one of the earliest perennials into flower, but the foliage does die back after flowering, so it is best mixed amongst summer flowers, which can then maintain interest in the border. Please note that this plant will die to the ground in summer and will not reappear until early Spring the next season. Grows to 90cm.
Rodgersia aesculifolia: Towering spikes of star-shaped, white or pink flowers on large panicles up to 60cm long in midsummer. This striking, clump-forming perennial with its horse chestnut-like leaves looks great planted in the moist margins of a stream or pond. Best grown in a sheltered, shady spot where it contrasts well with the lacy texture of ferns. Grows to 2m.

Planting tips:

Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. Where possible, plant in odd numbers, and cluster them together to give impact. Multiples of 3 work really well set out in irregular triangles for an organic feel, while larger numbers can be planted in mercurial clusters or drifts. In bigger gardens, try to repeat your clusters through the border to create a sense of rhythm and cohesion. Also, when setting your plants out, check their eventual spread and make sure they’ve enough space to fill out. After planting, keep plants well watered for their first year, particularly during warmer weather, and feed them with a good, general purpose fertiliser through the growing season.

Please note:

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
