Plant description

Taking inspiration from Sarah Price's award winning garden at Chelsea in 2023, this is a sophisticated silver-themed collection, blending two-tone daisies, architectural grasses, aromatic foliage, and dramatic iris blooms, perfect for adding texture, colour, and wildlife appeal to borders or containers.

What's included:

Each combination contains the following plants. The Iris will come in a 2-litre pot, while all the others are supplied in 9cm nursery pots:

Stachys byzantina 'Big Ears' : Soft spikes of woolly, purple flowers from June to September above rosettes of large, greyish white, felted leaves. This form of lamb's ears is primarily grown for its leaves, which are larger than other varieties. An excellent groundcover plant for sites in full sun, it's drought tolerant and provides a weed-suppressing carpet for much of the year. Grows to 45cm.
Festuca amethystina: A low-growing tufted decorative grass, which looks superb planted in bold drifts in a gravel garden or potted into a container. The narrow blue-green to grey-blue foliage adds interest all year round and, purple-flushed summer flower spikes, turning buff as they age make a wonderful combination. Prefers a sunny, well-drained spot over the winter where its low-maintenance architectural form can be appreciated. Grows 60cm.
Teucrium × lucidrys: Perfect for lining a pathway or fronting a border, this evergreen perennial has woody stems that are clothed in small deep green leaves, which emit a spicy aroma when they are brushed past or gently bruised. From midsummer onwards clusters of small pink flowers form towards the top of the stems, each with a prominent lip. Grows 30cm.
Iris 'Benton Susan': From thick rhizomes sprout regimented columns of erect sword-shaped leaves, heralding late spring blooms emerging on tall stems, flaunting a striking duality of contrasting colours. ‘Benton Susan’ bears creamy white lower falls, intricately stitched with golden brown veining that deepens to caramel at the ruffled edges while the upper standards glow a rich buff yellow, complemented by a vibrant orange beard. Grows 90cm.

Planting tips:

Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. Where possible, plant in odd numbers, and cluster them together to give impact. Multiples of 3 work really well set out in irregular triangles for an organic feel, while larger numbers can be planted in mercurial clusters or drifts. In bigger gardens, try to repeat your clusters through the border to create a sense of rhythm and cohesion. Also, when setting your plants out, check their eventual spread and make sure they’ve enough space to fill out. After planting, keep plants well watered for their first year, particularly during warmer weather, and feed them with a good, general purpose fertiliser through the growing season.

Please note:

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
