This climber is semi-evergreen, so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new foliage appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: July to September
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (needs winter protection in cold areas)

Impressively large (up to 10cm across) exotic-looking flowers, appear from midsummer on the slender stems of this semi-evergreen tendril climber. The flowers have a light scent and are sought-after by pollinating insects. It will be happiest on a sheltered wall where it gets some protection form the worst of the winter weather. Alternatively grow it in a cool conservatory of greenhouse.

Passion flowers are believed to represent the suffering of Christ on the cross and the mysteries of the Passion. The 17th century monastic scholar, Jacomo Bosio, describes 'the column rising in the centre of the flower surrounded by the thorn of crowns (and) the three nails at the top of the column. In between, near the base of the column is a yellow colour about the size of a reale, in which there are five spots or stains (stamens) of the hue of blood evidently setting forth five wounds received by our Lord on the cross.'

  • Garden care: Choose three to five of the strongest shoots, tying them in to horizontal wires. Once the plant is established, cut back the flowered shoots immediately after flowering to within two or three buds of the permanent framework of the plant. In spring remove dead, misplaced or overcrowded stems.

Fantastic plant would definitely buy again. Really beautiful

We absolutely love this plant/flower. It is such a shame the flower only lasts a day or two at most. Such beautiful detailing in the flower it is sad it doesn't last. But looks amazing in the garden. Everyone comments on them.

Absolutely Stunning!

Beautiful flowers that are so stunning - very hardy and fast growing. Planted in the summer and within 4 months have covered my porch which is just what I wanted. It certainly has the WOW factor and is real topic of conversation when anyone visits.
