Buy Hosta 'Purple Heart' plantain lily: Two-tone colouring

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: light dappled shade
  • Soil: best growth results are achieved in moist, fertile soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: August - September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This is a striking, compact cultivar, which will work equally well in a border or a pot. Each vibrant, light to mid-green leaf is held on a near-black stem and this dark colouring usually infuses the base of the leaf too. The foliage forms a neat mound, which in late summer is crowned with sprays of lavender coloured flowers.

  • Garden care:Surround plants with a ring of crushed eggshells to offer protection from slug damage.

Bought as part of shady border pack as plug plants. One hosta has been very sick and weak from the start, the others have fared slightly better but not as well as other plants in the pack despite being appropriately planted and nowhere near as strong as other hostas I have in garden.

Gorgeous hosta

Started to spread its gorgeous purple-green leaves much earlier than my other hostas and lasted right into autumn when others were already dying back. Didn't flower this year but grew large and strong leaves, and even seemed unaffected by slugs! A real gem.

I would buy this Host a again

Very healthy but bit small when it arrives. Soon started growing though. Most striking of the Hosta's I think. Beautiful dark stems and mauve coloured flowers. They died down for Winter so keeping fingers crossed it will survive after the snow.

We planted this up with Trollis and Ferns in a shady spot. Though the plants were tiny on arrival, they developed well and bloomed really well. I would recommend this as one of the best, interesting hostas.

Beautiful leaves

A great hosta with lovely vibrant leaves. Looks elegant next to box bushes. Only thing is that slugs are also attracted.
