Buy Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Gold' beech dawyck gold: Forms a dense column of foliage

This tree is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: tolerant of a wide range of well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: quite fast-growing
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The new foliage of this relatively compact (for a beech), columnar tree, emerges bright yellow before maturing to fresh green. As the tree ages, it forms a gorgeous taper-like shape, that makes it ideal for planting each side of a large garden entrance. It also makes a magnificent stand-alone specimen in the lawn, and like all beeches, it can tolerate a wide range of soils - including chalk.

  • Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly.
