Buy Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Peach' (Dalmatian Series) foxglove: A new form that usually flowers in its first year

  • Position: partial shade
  • Soil: moist, well-drained garden soil
  • Rate of growth: fast growing
  • Flowering period: June and July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Glorious peach-coloured trumpets appear on the stout, branching stems from midsummer, creating structural interest in the border and attracting beneficial insects to the garden. Recently introduced, the foxgloves in the 'Dalmation Series' will usually flower in their first year.

  • Garden care: Ensure that the soil is kept moist in summer. After flowering cut back the flowered spikes to encourage more sideshoots. Cut down to the ground after flowering. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-ro tted organic matter around the plant in early spring.

These plants are mainly short-lived perennials, although if happy they will produce plenty of new sideshoots and self-seed freely.

Lovely coloured flowers

I like digitalis so decided to buy these perennials ones. I bought purple, peach and white but prefer the peach and white ones. They started flowering in early June and when they'd finished I cut off the flower stalks as recommended by Crocus and new shoots and flowers have appeared. They are not as tall as annual digitalis and their leaves are smaller so they work well in the border, but I think they would do well in pots too.

Unusual coloured digitalis

These digitalis have flowered this year only a few months after planting. They are looking great and taller than expected - probably due to all the rain we've had this year (2019). I also bought Dalmation White and Dalmation Purple which are also growing very well. I look forward to seeing how they do next year as they are perennials.
