Buy Ceratostigma plumbaginoides hardy plumbago: Piercing blue autumn flowers

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile and well-drained
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: August to October
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The slender red stems of this low spreading, woody perennial are clothed in bright green leaves, which take on spectacular red shades in autumn before they fall. They are mainly grown however for their vivid blue flowers, which form in small clusters from late summer to mid-autumn. A superb plant for adding late colour to the front of the border, it will become drougt tolerant once established.

  • Garden care: In early or mid-spring cut back the flowered shoots to within 2.5cm (1in) of the old growth. After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.

Impressive resilience after unfortunate start.

Am using this to provide colour and substance in a new border. Despite an unfortunate start, when it was delivered packed upside down ( for which I was gratefully recompensed) this tough little plant has come up trumps and is now looking healthy, about 40cm wide with good leaf coverage and a fair number of beautiful blue flowers.

Happy gardener.

Plant in a border, near the front, as plants are not very tall. The flowers are blue so go well with orange and yellow.

Lovely foliage plus flowers

I have a number of these planted among azaleas and think that the foliage shades complement one another. The plants have thrived and survived the winter unscathed. They give months of value from their foliage and long lasting blue flowers that continue well into the autumn.
