Buy Prunus 'Shirotae' Japanese flowering cherry: A white-flowering spreading deciduous tree

This tree is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: tolerates most soils
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: April to May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Fragrant, pure white semi-double flowers clothe this small spreading deciduous tree in mid-spring. As the blooms fade, pale green leaves emerge, darkening with age before producing a dazzling, fiery autumn display. This award-winning tree is a perfect choice for small to medium-sized gardens.

  • Garden care: Plant 'Shirotae' as soon as conditions allow (avoiding frozen and waterlogged soil). Choose a sheltered spot to protect emerging blossom. Incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker. Cut back any dead, diseased or crossing branches.
