Buy Phlox subulata 'Snowflake' phlox: Forms a creeping carpet of white stars

This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun ideally, or lightly dappled shade
  • Soil: humus-rich, fertile, moist but freely draining soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period:April-May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This spreading and low-growing phlox is ideal for alpine beds or pots, but it also makes a wonderful ground cover at the front of a sunny border. It can even be used to fill gaps between paving slabs - or tumble over the top of a wall. In spring, you can enjoy the white flowers, which virtually smother the foliage and create a carpet of stars.

  • Garden care: Give it a trim after the flowers have faded and lift and divide clumps in autumn.
