Whether your garden’s large or small, bulbs are adaptable, affordable and easy to grow - and they’re irrepressibly cheerful when they start to appear after a long winter. One of our favourite ways to use bulbs is to create a ‘bulb lasagne’ in pots. By choosing different bulbs, including crocus, anemones, iris and alliums, and planting them in layers, it’s possible to enjoy a succession of flowers that can add colour from late winter to early summer.

TOP TIPS FOR A BULB LASAGNE

  • Bulbs like to be planted to a depth that is three times their height
  • Plant the taller or later flowering bulbs lower than your shorter or early flowering types
  • There are exceptions to this rule, tulips like to be planted deeply so place them in the lowest level of your lasagne
  • For maximum impact use lots of bulbs in your pots to create overflowing, beautiful displays
