Buy Viola cornuta 'Alba Group' horned violet: Subtly-scented, pure white flowers

This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average to fast-growing
  • Flowering period: May to August
  • Flower colour: pure white
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Masses of subtly scented, pure white flowers appear for several months from early summer above loose, spreading mounds of fresh green foliage. A firm favourite of the designers, this horned white violet is often showcased at Chelsea - and that's because of its natural good looks as well as its ability to fit into most settings with ease. In the home garden, it's ideal for filling gaps at the front of a border, or lining the edges of a path. It's also a valuable addition to a pot or windowbox.

  • Garden care: The semi-evergreen foliage should be cut back after flowering to maintain a neat, compact shape. Deadheading faded flowers regularly will also prolong flowering.
