Buy Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Pink Beauty' Japanese snowball bush: Ideal for a Japanese-style garden

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Wonderful, white, lacecap-like flowers in late-spring, maturing to pink, and toothed, deeply veined, dark green leaves, turning red-purple in autumn. The horizontally tiered branches of this deciduous shrub make an excellent feature for a sunny shrub or mixed border. Best on fertile, moist, well-drained soil, it's particularly suitable for a Japanese-style garden.

  • Garden care: Keep the pruning of young plants to a minimum. Any vertical shoots that threaten to spoil the distinctive tiered shape of established plants should be cut back to their point of origin in summer after flowering.

Eventual height & spread

I live in a ground floor flat and there is a communal garden. I am looking for a fairly fast growing evergreen shrub/small tree which will flower in spring/ summer to replace a large collapsed budlea. Could a Viiburnum Plicatum be a possibility. A leaf to turn in the autumn for some colour as well. The choice needs to grow to at least 2/3 metres. please advise

Franny

Hello, This is a deciduous shrub, so if you are looking for year round foliage, it would not be ideal. Also, it is worth keeping in mind that it is the deciduous shrubs that tend to produce the best leaf colour in autumn - usually just before they are shed. I am not sure what soil type or aspect your plant will be growing in, however if you click on the following link it will take you to our full range of fast growing evergreen shrubs. You can narrow down the search results by using the navigation bar on the left hand side of the page. http://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/shrubs/plcid.1/vid.4/vid.6/numitems.100/

Hello, could you please tell me if the leafs of Vibernum Plicatum,'pink beauty' l change their colour in autumn, I'm interested in getting autumnal colour as well and spring colour, also how fast does it grows as I would like it to cover my 2 metre fence Many thanks Mónica

Monica

Hello, Yes, the leaves of this shrub will take on a purplish hue in autumn before they drop. As for the growth rate, it is impossible to be too specific as this is largely influenced by external factors such as the available water, light and nutrients.

Specimen Ceanothus or another large bushy shrub.... Good afternoon, When I was first looking for a Ceanothus to replace the one we have in our front garden, I looked on your website, but you only had small ones. Our once lovely Ceanothus has been pruned out of all recognition again this year, as I planted it a bit too near our boundary when it was a baby. I know it may come back, but it is getting ridiculous as every time it grows back it has to be cut back again severely and then ooks a mess for most of the year. Have you got a nice, tall, bushy Ceanothus to replace it? I love my Ceanothus but perhaps if you don't have a big one, do you have another large, flowering shrub as an alternative? Hope you can help Regards Margaret

D DRAKETT

Hello Margaret, it is rare to find larger sized Ceanothus as they are usually quite short-lived and don't normally live longer than 6 - 8 years. We do have a selection of larger shrubs on our site like Hamamelis, Hydrangeas, Magnolias, Acer, Cornus, Cotinus, Philadelphus, Syringa and Viburnum, so you may find something of interest. They will be listed in this section. http://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/ I hope this helps. Helen Plant Doctor
