This new and improved red shallot, produces its attractive bulbs early in the season (usually from July), and as they store well, they can be enjoyed for several months from midsummer. Excellent for adding to salads or used in cooking, they have a good aroma and their pink flesh has a sweet tang. Hailed as being more tolerant of heavy soils than most, it's a great all-rounder.

Sets are the easiest way to grow shallots in the garden, and they will mature faster than those grown from seed. Plant very early in the season, in mid-February if possible, in a sunny position, and allow room for the shallots to splay out and produce clusters of bulbs.

Garden care: Plant this red shallot from February to April, 3cm deep and 12cm apart. They are usually ready to start lifting from July to September.
