Buy Primula florindae giant yellow cowslip: Fragrant sulphur-yellow flowers

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: partial shade
  • Soil: moist, humus-rich, neutral to acid soil
  • Rate of growth: average to fast
  • Flowering period: June to July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Good-sized clumps of large (to 45cm long) leaves are topped with slender stems that carry loose clusters of scented, sulphur-yellow flowers in summer. A moisture-loving perennial, it looks impressive when planted in drifts at the edges of a pond, but it will also add colour and interest to boggier sections of the garden. Pair it with evergreen ferns that will provide year-round interest, as well as help mask the foliage as it dies back.

  • Garden care: Divide large clumps after the plant has flowered, preferably during a wet spell. Tolerates more sun if the soil is reliably moist.
