Buy Osmanthus × burkwoodii osmanthus: Evergreen shrub with scented, white spring flowers

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: April to May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This popular, rounded, evergreen shrub has glossy, finely toothed, dark green leaves beautifully offset by highly scented, jasmine like, white flowers in mid and late spring. In flower, it will light up a shady corner of the garden and as an evergreen, makes a lovely foil for other flowering plants and ferns.

  • Garden care: Minimal pruning is required. Remove misplaced, dead or diseased branches in late spring and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.

Beautiful Beautiful Plant

Beautiful Beautiful plant and packed superb - waiting for more to come in stock. Will only buy my plants from Crocus going forward :)

Gorgeous shrub

Just started a new garden in a new build. Have used this website a lot for competitive prices for large shrubs/trees.

Created a gorgeous hedge

I bought a number of these to plant a hedge when I installed a gate and needed some instant impact. These were fabulous, large and healthy plants, and they're filling out very nicely now. They're covered with fragrant blossoms when they flower, which is gorgeous, and people passing by comment on how lovely they are.

Tough as old boots!

Really good, large, healthy plants delivered, covered in buds. These shrubs are really hardy - I've grown them on sandy soil, clay, sun and shade and they really don't mind. A great, flowering evergreen which doesn't mind a bit of neglect.

Excellent and reliable evergreen

Love this plant as it doesn't get bugs or diseases and forms a nice shape by itself. Its gorgeous leaf colour in winter stands out from deciduous shrubs nearby. The scent is gorgeous, so plant it near paths or the front door! Every garden should have one! No negative comments as I consider it a must have plant.

Can I plant this shrub in a pot inside my front driveway wall for screening? The driveway is South East facing but the pot will be in shade behind the wall which is about 60cms high. I want something that will get good height but that I can clip the sides in so it doesn't obstruct the driveway too much. What size pot would you recommend / square, round or trough?

Hello, These tend to do quite well in pots provided they are kept well fed and watered. I would avoid using a trough, but you can use either a square or a round pot - provided it is as large as possible.

Hi, I have Osmanthus x burkwoodii, which I have had for about 8 years and has recently been planted on the soil since my house move. Till then it was in the plant pot. However it doesn't seem to grow in comparison with another Osmanthus I purchased 3 months ago. The new one is doing great and growing steadily but this old one isn't. It's almost as if it ceased to grow any taller ( max height for this is 45cm ). I have planted them in the right area, which does provide sunny spot, but still don't know what's wrong with it. Please advise what to do with this old Osmanthus.

Hello, As it has been growing in a pot for a long time, I wonder if the roots have become restricted. This should have been noticeable when you planted it out as they would have been circling the pot. Failing that, I would just give it a good feed and make sure it is kept well watered and it should eventually start putting on new growth.
