Buy Lythrum salicaria purple loosestrife: A fast-growing, moistire-loving perennial

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or lightly dappled shade
  • Soil: fertile, deep, moist soil
  • Rate of growth: average to fast
  • Flowering period: June to August
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Often found colonising the edges of lakes or reliably moist meadows, this elegant perennial will also tolerate dryer conditions, which means it can work equally well in both garden or wildflower settings. It’s sought after for its upright spikes of purple-pink flowers, which add colour and vertical interest, while also attracting many beneficial pollinators.

  • Garden care: Sow seeds shallowly in a well-prepared seedbed and water when necessary. When large enough to handle, gently space them out to 50cm intervals. Cut back flowers and foliage as they fade.

  • Sow: August to October or March to April

  • Approximate quantity: 250 seeds
