Buy Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star' flaky juniperus: Silver-blue foliage throughout the year

  • Position: full sun or lightly dappled shade
  • Soil: any well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The dense, spreading branches of this attractive evergreen are clothed in silvery-blue leaves and glossy black cones. Forming a low, splaying clump, this compact evergreen shrub makes attractive ground cover at the front of the border or larger rockery. Tough and easy to grow, it will tolerate a wide range of conditions, including (once established) dry chalky or sandy soils.

  • Garden care:Apply a generous layer of mulch around the base of the plant (avoiding the immediate crown) in late winter. Pruning is not usually necessary, however any shoots that ruin the symmetry of the plant can be removed in autumn.

In its third year, this Juniperus has finally bulked up and although it has looked good throughout the seasons in the two previous years, it has now raised itself off the ground and looks even more fantastic. The bright silver foliage has a stunning definition. I have no other edging plant that will look reliably neat and tidy and draws the eye all the year round. I wish I has bought more than one!
