Buy Hibiscus syriacus Blue Chiffon ('Nowood3') (PBR) (Chiffon Series) tree hollyhock: Large, double, blue flowers

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: humus-rich, moist but well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil
  • Rate of growth: average to fast-growing
  • Flowering period: August to October
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Large, double, blue flowers with a neat swirl of smaller petals in the centre appear from August to October. This is an award-winning tree hollyhock that makes an excellent specimen plant for a sheltered, sunny border. Unlike some of the older, double varieties it stands up particularly well to wind and rain.

  • Garden care: To encourage a bushy habit prune young plants hard in late spring. After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. Once established it requires little if any regular pruning.

Please note: the plant is supplied in a nursery pot, but if you do wish to pot it up for the patio we have a great range on our website.

Blowsy flower - ie striking

I bought this plant for a friend of mine and as they do not have a large garden they put it in a large pot. They followed the instructions from Crocus and it looks very good. I see it quite often and 'monitor' its progress and when it gets too big I will 'drop the hint' that it is a good idea to give to a friend to put in their garden (not me - too blousy looking a plant for me). They mulched it during the autumn and brought into the conservatory to over winter.

I would buy this product again

Flowered well first year and expecting another great show this summer

Excellent Plant

Excellent service, delivery, packaging from Crocus plus beautiful plants.

I would buy this product again.

I planted both in the garden as soon as they arrived. They arrived on time, really healthy and well packed. They both flowered for me, and I can't wait for them to flower again this year.

Enthusiastic but clueless

Beautiful Blooms

Low maintenance and very attractive once grown and blooming.

Absolutely Beautiful!

This small shrub looks lovely planted towards the front of a border where it can be admired. It was covered in blooms. I grew it between two strongly growing salvia plants in a hot pink with a wide spread. I made sure to mulch it well as my soil is dry and sandy.

Hibiscus syriacus Blue Chiffon ('Notwood3') (PBR) (Chiffon Series)

I was given this hibiscus and it flowered beautifully the first year but has not flowered since. The leaves come, but no flower buds and then the leaves yellow and drop off. It is in a container (It's a small plant so far) and is fed and watered regularly. How can I get it to flower again?

Hello, These plants like lots of sun, so make sure yours is placed in full sun. Also, make sure that the pot is large enough for the plant to spread out (and doesn't dry out too quickly). You can also give it a bit of a push by feeding it with a high potash fertiliser during the growing season.

Is this plant suitable to keep potted up or does it need to be planted in a border? If I can keep it potted up, what size of pot would you recommend?

Hello there Yes you could grow these in a container as long as you keep it well watered and fed during the growing season. I would plant into a 35-40cm pot using a John Innes no 3 compost. Hope this helps
