Buy Buddleja Sugar Plum ('Lonplum') (PBR) butterfly bush Sugar Plum: A new compact form with red flowers

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast growing
  • Flowering period: July to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Lower-growing than many of the other buddlejas, this is a fine new cultivar with long tapering clusters of pinkish red flowers. These look amazing when in full bllom, and will attract a wide range of butterflies to the garden. Easy to grow and drought tolerant once established, this undemanding deciduous shrub offers a long season of colour and interest.

  • Garden care: Prune back hard in March, removing all of the previous year's growth to three or four buds.

Lovely colour

This arrived a lot smaller than I was expecting and took a while to get going. I grew it in a pot as I didn't have room in the ground. At the end of this year it has developed a pleasing shape and been quite floriferous for its size. I'm expecting it to be taller this time next year. The colour is very striking without being garish, and goes well with the planting colour theme in my garden.

Used to attract butterflies, bees and insects. Does the job well. The plant is small in size and looks fabulous in a pot adding colour, interest and wildlife to a patio.

Slow grower

I planted this at the rear of my south west faving garden and it has established, with a brief flowering period but is a slow grower. I'm hoping it will kick on in its second year.

Delighted with this plant. It went in late spring just before the very long, dry 2018 summer, yet it established brilliantly. Watered fairly regularly but that was it. It put on excellent growth and flowered really well. Flowers are a lovely deep/bright magenta.

Superb.

A beautiful statement plant. It has massive, wonderfully scented flowerheads (by far the largest I have seen), which on mine have reached over a foot in length. These bring in lots of butterflies and bees. I believe this plant only grows to around 6ft so is great for a small garden or patio. My plant hits around the 5'5" mark currently in its first year, and is looking very strong. I highly recommend this Buddleja which I regard as one of the very best I have come across.

A lovely plant.

This plant was purchased as it is an unusual and rich colour, is very fragrant and not too big for my small garden. It has survived this cold and wet winter and is looking really healthy. I am looking forward to it growing on this year.

Beautiful - perfect size for spot

So pleased with this. Beautiful colour and attracts butterflies and bees into my garden. That was what I was after but no space for the traditional large buddlea. This smaller variety fits in the garden perfectly. Delivered in good package and plant in very good condition. Had nearly a year and still very healthy.

Buddleja Sugar Plum

A real surprise. I have never tried a 'compact' Buddleja before. It does grow to about 1.5 to 2 metres, but retains a compact shape and fits in very well midway along a small sunny herbaceous border. Seems to flower for longer than other varieties of Buddleja and is in every respect a nice plant, which is just ending a second summer of growth without any problems. I pruned it back to about 30 cm this Spring and that seems to work well for me.

Buddleja - the ultimate butterfly magnet

The best butterfly plant of all is the buddleja, a shrubby plant with fingers of honey-scented flowers. When given a warm, sunny position it will ooze nectar from its slender flowers, which come in many colours. The most attractive to butterflies and be
