Buy Betula pendula Fastigiata Joes ('Jolep 1') silver birch Fastigiata Joes: A new neat form for smaller spaces

This tree is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or lightly dappled shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Perfect for smaller spaces, Betula 'Fastigiata Joes' has a neat, narrow pyramidal habit. The small leaves and delicately twisting branches look particularly elegant against the characteristic white bark which usually develops in 3-5 years. Pretty catkins adorn the tree in spring and in autumn the leaves turn attractive shades of yellow before falling. Shortlisted for the Plant of the Year at Chelsea 2017.

  • Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting and stake well.

Eventual height & spread

I would be interested in planting a row of Betula pendula 'Fastigiata Joes' silver birch along a fence. How much space should I leave between trees?

sdadams

Hello It really depends on the look you are wanting to create - whether you want them growing into each other to create a hedge like screening, or more like individual trees. Also how long are you willing to wait for them to fill in a space. You can use the eventual spread that we show on the web page of 2m as a planting guide, or closer if you prefer.
