Buy Andromeda polifolia 'Compacta' bog rosemary: Originating from peat bogs

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist, acid, humus-rich soil
  • Rate of growth: slow to average
  • Flowering period: May and June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Leathery, rosemary-like leaves form along the length of the stems, slowly forming a low evergreen dome, which in late spring and early summer, is nearly smothered with the appearance of the small, bell-shaped blooms. A pretty addition to the front of a reliably moist border or rockery, it could also be grown in a pot filled with ericaceous compost - provided it is kept well watered.

  • Garden care: Add composted pine needles or well-rotted leaf mould when planting. Apply a generous 5-7 cm (2-3in) mulch of composted pine needles or well-rotted leaf mould each year around the base of the plant in early spring
