Plant description

This bright and cheerful shade-loving collection pairs striking foxglove cultivars with silvery foliage and delicate, textured ferns. The combination creates a vibrant, uplifting display that thrives in shaded spots, adding both colour and interest to woodland or shady borders.

Carefully curated to deliver on style and performance, and grown to order on the Crocus nursery, our mini-border plant collections create beautiful displays that come back year after year. The collections comprise six, 9cm plants.

Each collection is suited to fill a 1m sq space in the border, and has been designed to enable you to either place them on their own, intersperse them with other plants, or weave them in multiples to create a cohesive, considered look to your planting scheme.

Alternatively, pop them into our Tall antique zinc dolly pot and create a showstopping seasonal display for the patio.

What's included:

Each collection contains the following plants:

  • 1 x Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian White' (Dalmatian Series): You won't be disappointed with this new foxglove if you like to see immediate results, as it will nearly always flower in its first year. The pure-white flowers that form on the upright branching stems have a pretty freckling of plum coloured markings in their throat, and if cut back promptly, there may well be a second flush of flowers later in the year. Grows to 60cm.

  • 2 x Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Purple': (Dalmatian Series): A breakthrough in breeding has produced these new 'Dalmatian' foxgloves, which will usually flower in their first year. This purple flowered cultivar forms tidy clumps of foliage, but it is for the wonderful spires of thimble-like flowers that open upwards from the base of the spike in summer, that it is best loved. Grows to 60cm.

  • 2 x Brunnera macrophylla 'Looking Glass' (PBR): The foliage of this beautiful ground-covering perennial is almost entirely infused with silver, leaving only some of the veins and outermost edges of the leaves a rich green. This then makes it ideal for illuminating the woodland floor or partially shaded border edge - and just after the fresh batch of foliage appears each spring, it is almost immediately followed by sprays of rich, sky blue flowers. Try mixing it with ferns, spring flowering bulbs, and hostas for a naturalised effect. Grows to 35cm.

  • 1 x Athyrium otophorum var. okanum: Forming a graceful clump of light, yellow-green fronds, which are in stark contrast to the deep purple-red stalks, this decorative fern is ideal for helping to illuminate a partially shaded border. It looks wonderful when planted en-masse, but it will also offer diversity in both colour and texture when teamed with other shade-lovers. Grows to 80cm.

Planting tips:

Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant.

Where possible, plant in odd numbers, and cluster them together to give impact. Multiples of 3 work really well set out in irregular triangles for an organic feel, while larger numbers can be planted in mercurial clusters or drifts. In bigger gardens, try to repeat your clusters through the border to create a sense of rhythm and cohesion.

Also, when setting your plants out, check their eventual spread and make sure they’ve enough space to fill out. After planting, keep plants well watered for their first year, particularly during warmer weather, and feed them with a good, general purpose fertiliser through the growing season.

When potting up, use a good quality general-purpose compost, and make sure the plants are kept well watered, particularly during warmer weather.

Please note:

The plants in this collection will die right back in autumn, then fresh new growth will appear again in spring.
