Description

Give small birds a safe shelter in your garden with our wooden barrel nester. With fewer hedgerows and large trees available to birds, this will provide much-needed roosting and nesting space.

Designed in the UK and made from sustainable timber with steel hoops, the natural wood grain gives it a lovely rustic look. It’s nice and deep with a secure lid to keep birds safe from cats and other predators. The small entry hole will suit a variety of small species including sparrows, nuthatches, pied flycatchers and tits.

Install the barrel 1.5-3 metres high, away from bird baths and feeders and out of prevailing winds. If you can, ensure it faces between north and south east so it catches the morning sun but avoids the midday heat.

Care and maintenance

Clean out your nester annually in the late summer/early autumn. Remove the roof by unscrewing the single screw located on the side of the barrel. The barrel and hoops will age naturally to give it an even more authentic look. However, you can treat the wood with an acrylic exterior wood finish every 2-3 years to preserve it.
