Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' is a male cultivar, meaning it won’t produce berries but is invaluable for pollinating female skimmias. Its neat, dome-shaped habit makes it perfect for filling gaps in borders or adding structure to patio containers.

How to care for Skimmia japonica Rubella:
When planting, enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted organic matter to improve moisture retention, soil fertility and drainage. Skimmia prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil, so avoid chalky conditions unless supplemented with ericaceous compost. Water well after planting and keep the soil consistently moist, especially in dry spells.
Minimal pruning is required, but you can lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Mulching in spring with compost or leaf mould will help retain moisture and keep the roots cool.
