Buy Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Blackfield' (PBR) mountain fleece flower: Tall, deep red flower spikes

This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist but well drained or reliably moist soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: July to October
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

With spikes of intense blood-red flowers that open over a long period from even darker buds, this first rate perennial not only looks great, but it will help attract beneficial insects including bees. Even when not in bloom, the relatively large (to 10cm in length) oval to heart shaped foliage offers interest.

  • Garden care: Lift and divide congested colonies in spring or autumn. Cut back after it has finished flowering, or wait until late winter or early spring. Apply a mulch of composted organic matter every year.
