This tree is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moist, well-drained, acidic soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: March to April
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Bred in New Zealand by leading magnolia breeders, Felix and Mark Jury, 'Felix' is a stunning form, which once it reaches 5-6 years of age, will produce its huge (up to 30cm across), bright pink flowers in early spring. Each flower is impressive in itself, but as they appear in good numbers, the overall effect is really spectacular. Relatively compact and upright in habit (more tree-like than shrubby) it makes a super addition to smaller gardens, where it will perform best in a sunny spot with protection from strong winds.

These rare plants tend not to form lateral branches until they become more mature. Currently they are single-stemmed and approximately 40-60cm tall.

  • Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in midsummer. Plant in a sheltered spot, adding plenty of peat to the planting hole. Mulch in spring with manure and leafmould, especially in dry soils.
