Buy Cordyline australis cabbage tree: Wonderful conservatory plant

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average to fast
  • Flowering period: July to August
  • Hardiness: half hardy

This popular, palm-like tree has arching, lance shaped, light green leaves, retained throughout the year. Mature trees produce dramatic white flower spikes that smell exquisite. It's an ideal focal point plant for a sunny, protected border, patio or for the exotic garden. It is also faster growing than the varieties with coloured foliage. In frost-prone areas it's best grown inside a warm greenhouse or conservatory.

  • Garden care: In spring, when new growth appears and all danger of hard frosts has passed, cut back frost-damaged branches to just above the newly formed shoots.

My cordyline looks very sad. Do they like a lot of water? I imagined the answer is no, but maybe I'm wrong! It survived the very hard winter and the beast from the east quite happily, but now looks in need of a tonic It's in a circular bed surrounded by paving but doesn't seem to get much water.

Hello, These plants do not need a lot of water, however they do need to be watered occasionally. Therefore, I would give your plant a feed with a general purpose fertiliser (following the manufacturers instructions) and make sure it is kept watered. Once that is done, I suspect it will soon start looking happier.
