This climber is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.
"Spring is an excellent time to plant a viticella clematis, such as ‘Flore Pleno’. It will have a chance to put its feet down and flower by late July. Climbers take up little ground room and viticellas, bred from a Spanish species, are drought tolerant and easy to prune. Just cut them back hard now. They flower on new wood. 'Purpurea Plena Elegans’, 'Etoile Violette', 'Polish Spirit’, ‘Romantika’, and 'Dark Eyes’ are all excellent viticellas."

Used on trellis to cover unsightly neighbouring front garden. In a barrel with j innes no 3 and a honeysuckle. Pruned to 30 cm buds last spring. Don't feel it's massively thriving but only in a pot, albeit a big one. Also flowers are nice but bit too subtle for my purpose. Will choose bigger brighter variety next time.

Hello, It is really disappointing when something like this happens, but the good news is that this plant may well rally and send up new shoots from the base. The only thing you can do now though is to just give it a bit of time and wait and see. If however there are still no signs of life by the end of May, then I suspect it will need to be replaced.
