Spring Bulbs to Plant this Autumn

White tulips are one of the most elegant options for spring bulbs. Coming in a range of tones from pure white to soft cream or edges of green, they will create stunning displays from early to late spring.

Our top spring bulb collections for 2025

Knowing which spring bulbs to buy for your garden can be tricky. That's why we have designed our collections of bulbs to give you the best displays for the longest period. Here are some of our favourite designer collections.

The double tulip collection is a must if you love large peony tulips. A perfect pot filler with three favourite double tulips, including 'Blue Diamond', 'Finola' and 'Mondial'. The tones of white, soft pink and lilac blue will flower for several weeks from mid-April.

Alliums are the best choice for a summer bulb collection. With their large purple round heads, they are perfect for pollinators. The shades of purple allium bulb collection will add colour and structure in late spring and early summer. Plus, if you leave the heads to dry, they will add interest well into late autumn.

Choose daffodils for early colour that heralds the arrival of spring. Our favourite one is the spring sunshine daffodil collection. Starting in March, these three daffodils - 'Kimmeridge', 'Birma Star', and 'June Allyson' - bring lasting beauty that improves yearly.

Finally, the Crocus and Snowdrop collection is a must if you want to naturalise your lawn. It pairs our best-selling Galanthus nivalis and Crocus tommasinianus, which will spread throughout your lawn. Plant in generous drifts for a natural look.

Our top advice for spring bulbs

Autumn-planting bulbs

  • The planting time for spring displays is generally in early autumn, between September and October. This gives them plenty of time to grow roots before the soil gets too cold. Typically, aim to plant bulbs 6 to 8 weeks before the first frost.

The only bulb that is an exception to this rule is tulips. The best time to plant tulip bulbs in pots is from early autumn. Ensure you are using fresh soil.

However, if planted in a border plant later in autumn, even early winter. This will help them avoid 'tulip fire'. A fungal disease that can stop them from flowering.

Winter flowering bulbs

  • In the dark months, adding colour with bulbs will bring you joy when little else is in flower. Buy these spring bulbs for a stunning winter display.

Snowdrops are one of our late winter favourites. Appearing in January, they are often the first flowers of the year. Their small white heads are perfect for naturalising in woodland areas or adding to windowboxes.

Iris Reticulata are miniature irises that appear in January. They come in a range of colours, from deep purple to soft ice blue, and look stunning in pots around doorways.

The best early flowering daffodil is Narcissus 'Rijnveld's Early Sensation'. As the first daffodil of the year, it often appears through the late winter frosts. A large yellow trumpet that will fill your garden with cheer, year after year.

Finally, for soft pink touches, choose cyclamens. These woodland floor flowers are stunning miniatures that will add elegance to your garden. Plant them in low walls or windowboxes to appreciate them year after year.

Spring bulbs for pollinators

  • Spring-flowering bulbs are ideal for pollinators. They often offer the season's first food and are essential for bees and butterflies. Buy these bulbs to encourage pollinators in your garden.

For late winter pollen, choose snowdrops, crocus or winter aconites. These tiny flowers appear in January and February, perfect for the first bees of the year.

For early spring, it has to be daffodil bulbs. The bold and brilliant daffodil collection if full of bright colours that will attract bees and pollinators alike.

Alliums are the best options for late spring butterflies. Choose a butterfly allium collection that will flower from May until August, filling your garden with butterflies.
