Fluffy white, waxy blobs appear on the bark of trees. Early in the spring they are mainly around old pruning cuts and wounds. Later in the summer they spread to younger branches, where their feeding causes knobbly swelling.
n cold weather the swellings caused by the summer feeding of the woolly aphids can split causing wounds which allows diseases like apple canker to enter the plant.
Organic - Once an infestation has got hold, it is very difficult to control woolly aphids. Watch out for any signs of woolly aphids in the spring and spray with an organic insecticde. It is also important to keep plants healthy so it is worthwhile mulching aroung the base of plants with well rotted farmyard manure in both the spring and autumn.
Chemical – spray with Bug Clear Concentrate at the frst sign of attack in the spring.
