Leaves turn pale yellow-green. Later they can develop red or purple tints. The older leaves are usually affected first. Plants also tend to be stunted.
Lack of nitrogen. Nitrogen is the chemical that is essential in the production of chlorophyll, the green pigment in leaves that allows plants to trap and convert sunlight into food.
Plants are weakened and will often die if the deficiency isn't addressed.
Organic - Use a nitrogen rich fertilizer like Blood, Fish and Bone. In severe cases a liquid feed can be sprayed onto the leaves as this is the quickest way of getting nutrients into a plant. Mulching with well rotted farmyard manure in spring and autumn is one of the best means of feeding both plants and the soil.
Chemical - there are lots of fertilisers on the market which can be used to feed .
