Straw-coloured circular patches of about 2-5cm across.
A fungus which is encouraged by compacted soil and a high pH. It is particularly prevalent in damp, mild weather.
They are very unsightly but usually affect only high-quality luxury lawns. However, these are exactly the type of lawns where the patches will really show up!
Chemical - Feed with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser in the spring.
Organic - Improve the condition of the soil. Firstly aerate by spiking it with a fork. Also, remove the thatch (the old grass cuttings that gets bedded down at the base of the grass blades) by raking it out in early autumn.
