Crocus wins 36th gold medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show
Crocus is delighted to have won their 36th gold medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, reuniting with Tom Stuart-Smith for their 12th collaboration.
The garden, created for Tate Britain, has been match-funded by Project Giving Back and the Clore Duffield Foundation. The team at Crocus built the garden and worked alongside Dave Root of Kelways to provide the trees, shrubs and wider herbaceous perennials.
Designed by Tom Stuart-Smith for Tate Britain, the garden explores the connection between art, landscape and community, creating a richly planted and contemplative space inspired by the gallery’s relationship with British nature and creativity. Following the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the garden will be relocated to Tate Britain, where it will become a permanent public garden for visitors, extending the project’s legacy beyond Chelsea and providing a lasting green space in central London.
This project marks the 39th garden built by Crocus at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and this year’s result brings the tally to 36 Gold Medals and 13 Best in Show awards.
“We are absolutely delighted to have partnered with Tom Stuart-Smith and Tate Britain and played a role in creating this legacy garden,” said Mark Fane, Co-founder of Crocus. “Last year I said that I’d retired from building gardens at Chelsea, but the chance to be partnering with Tom and involved in such an important project was too much to miss.”
Tom Stuart-Smith said:
“We are thrilled to have won a gold medal at this year’s show. The Tate Britain Garden is an evocation of a part of the larger Clore Garden at Tate Britain which we have designed and which is opening in Autumn 2026. The design takes a section of the garden at Tate and reconfigures it to suit the constraints of the flower show, inspired by East Asian woodlands and which uses a number of more tender and drought- tolerant species.
The planting reflects Tate’s sustainability goals and uses long-lived plants which increase biodiversity. A gentle curving path made from York stone, reclaimed from the existing Tate Garden, leads to a circular seating area, where the benches are also made from repurposed material from the garden. A tranquil water feature, based on microscopic images of fungal structures, is made with a series of small, shallow bronze dishes, inset into the paving and connected by rills. Surrounded by vibrant, complex planting, the space suggests the reimagining of the Tate Britain garden as a creative, richly diverse social space.”
