Crocus plant collection

This classic cottage garden border collection features deep crimson, thistle-like blooms, abundant violet-blue flowers, rich purple flower spikes, and vibrant purple lupin blooms. Purposefully designed to create a striking and long season, colourful display full of interest for both you, and pollinating insects.

Carefully curated to deliver on style and performance, and grown to order on the Crocus nursery, our mini-border plant collections create beautiful displays that come back year after year. Comprising six, 9cm plants, the collections will typically be dispatched from late March to mid-April - perfectly timed for spring planting and robust growth.

Each collection is suited to fill a 1m sq space, and has been designed to enable you to either place them on their own, intersperse them with other plants, or weave them in multiples through your borders to create a cohesive, considered look to your garden.

Each collection contains the following plants:

    • 2 x Cirsium rivulare 'Atropurpureum': Spectacular, deep crimson thistles appear on erect stems in July and August above spiny, dark green leaves. This handsome, towering thistle is a valuable addition to a summer garden and looks equally at home in a wildflower meadow, beside water or in groups among other perennials. Although it will tolerate dry conditions and partial shade, it does best in a moist, sunny border. Grows to 1.2m.

    • 1 x Geranium Rozanne ('Gerwat') (PBR): Each lavender-blue, saucer-shaped flower grows up to 5cm across, and has a white eye with purple veining. A spreading form, it looks wonderful in naturalised planting schemes, where it provides fast-growing ground cover, and will flower from early summer to mid-autumn. Grows to 60cm.

    • 1 x Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna': Above the compact mound of aromatic, grey-green foliage, purple-black stems arise from early summer bearing rich, violet-blue flowers. A vibrant and long-flowering addition to the border, they look spectacular when planted with rich plums ad pinks as well as smokey purples. Grows to 50cm.

    • 2 x Lupinus 'Masterpiece' (PBR): Stunning purple flowers that are orange flecked appear from early summer. This is a new variety and the fabulous colour looks great planted with blue and pink flowering plants. Great for the middle or back of a garden border, or can be planted up for pots on the patio. Remember to deadhead after flowering and protect against frost damage by covering the crown of the plant. Grows to 90cm.

  • Planting tips:
Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant.

Where possible, plant in odd numbers, and cluster them together to give impact. Multiples of 3 work really well set out in irregular triangles for an organic feel, while larger numbers can be planted in mercurial clusters or drifts. In bigger gardens, try to repeat your clusters through the border to create a sense of rhythm and cohesion.

Also, when setting your plants out, check their eventual spread and make sure they’ve enough space to fill out. After planting, keep plants well watered for their first year, particularly during warmer weather, and feed them with a good, general purpose fertiliser through the growing season.
