Buy Acanthus 'Whitewater' bear's breech 'Whitewater': Highly patterned folioage and impressive flower spikes

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: deep, fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: May to August
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Forming an attractive mound of large, deeply cut and highly patterned, cream and rich green foliage, this statuesque perennial will also produce upright flower spikes in summer, each bearing two-lipped white flowers that have a hooded, pinkish purple bract. A showy addition to the border where it will help add colour as well as structural interest, it will also do well in a large pot if kept well fed and watered.

  • Garden care: To minimise the risk of powdery mildew taking hold ensure that the plant is watered well during hot, dry spells. To rejuvenate and minimise congestion lift and divide large clumps in autumn or spring.
