Dry sun plant combination
- Achillea 'Walther Funcke': Flat, plate-like flowerheads are held high on tall stems above the ferny foliage throughout summer. The flower colour is a delicious shade of orange-red, sometimes with a pink flush when it opens, but it does fade to creamy yellow as it ages. Grows to 60cm.
- Perovskia 'Blue Spire': With its aromatic leaves and upright spikes of violet-blue flowers, Russian sage makes a wonderful companion to all kinds of late-summer ornamental grasses and perennials. This deciduous sub-shrub makes a real impact planted en masse alongside a path. Grows to 1.2m.
- Knautia macedonica: Deep crimson, and occasionally pink, pincushion-like flowers are held high on slender, branching stems from July to September. This popular, airy perennial brings long-lasting colour to a mixed or herbaceous border. It is also a magnet for bees and butterflies. Grows to 80cm.
- Alcea rosea Nigra: Towering stems rise above the hairy, lobed leaves from early summer bearing richly coloured, near-black, single flowers, each with a yellow throat. A magnificent biennial or short-lived perennial for a cottage garden setting. Grows to 2m.
- Planting tips:Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. For best results it is essential that the plants are kept well watered for the first year, particularly during warmer weather.
