Buy Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' Balkan clary: Dazzling purple blooms

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: light, moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well- drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to October
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A superb cultivar with glowing purple stems loaded with violet-blue flowers from June to October. The grey-green, aromatic foliage also makes an attractive accent in the summer border. A compact variety that is perfect for adding a splash of colour at the front of a well- drained herbaceous border or gravel garden. It thrives in a sunny spot and will become drought tolerant once established. The blooms are a magnet for butterflies and bees.

  • Garden care: To prolong flowering remove the flower spikes as soon they start to fade. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring.

A great addition to my borders

I purchased two of these plants in 9cm pots in 2017. They have been great from the outset and have provided such lovely colour and texture to my borders all Summer long...

Looks beautiful against pale yellows and pinks but didn't do a lot in 2018. Nice winter stems that haven't collapsed.

Great colour but tends to spread in the centre

Added this to the garden to attract bees, it established quickly and on a great display the first year. Tends to grow a bit bigger than posted but is very healthy and seems to cope with whatever the weather and pests throw at it. It is doing so well I divided it this Spring and now have another 4 healthy plants which were planted directly where they will stay

The dark purple blooms harmonise well with the paler, lilac Nepeta Walkers Low. The dark stems add something special to this plant. I'm going to try with Geranium Rozanne this year.

Six weeks of flowers

3

I have grown caradonna for a number of years, and like nearly all salvias of this type, it flowers for six weeks around May with no sporadic flowering after that and not the 4 months from June to October as stated in the description. cutting back after flowering will give a minor rebloom in the autumn. The black stems give a bit of interest after flowering but look a mess after a few months and the foliage is coarse and unattractive. Caradonna and other salvias of this type are showstopper when flowering but its too short and has little interest for the rest of the year to justify the space for it when other shrubby salvias do flower from June to november.
