Buy Salvia × jamensis 'Hot Lips' salvia: cherry red and white flowers

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

This spectacular plant displays striking red and white bi-coloured blooms on spikes, flowering from June right through to mid-autumn. This unique form shows a pure white tip with red hot lips; in the hotter months of summer it may have all red and all white flowers on the same plant. The aromatic foliage has a fine texture and small leaf, which can turn dark red in autumn.

  • Garden care: To prolong flowering remove the flower spikes as soon they start to fade. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring. Protect from excessive cold and waterlogged soils.

Eventual height & spread

You say that this plant dies back in Autumn and then new growth appears in Spring. However, the one I purchased from you last year has not died back. It is still very green and bushy (just minus flowers). No new growth apparent yet. Should I be cutting it back and, if so, when and how hard please?

Daffodil11

These plants can remain evergreen if they are not cut back by a hardy frost, so I suspect your garden is quite sheltered. As for pruning, you can give the remaining foliage a light trim in spring.

Can this be planted now in Autumn? Or will it be better to plant in Srping? Will it be available to buy from you in Spring 2019

Zorro

This is not fully hardy, so unless you have a sheltered garden with freely draining soil, it may be better to plant in spring. As for availability however, this is not something we can guarantee.
