Buy Berberis thunbergii 'Orange Sunrise' (PBR) barberry: Will light up the border like a beacon

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: slow to average
  • Flowering period: April to June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Upright shoots appear in spring, smothered in bright salmon-red leaves which light up the border like a beacon. As it ages, the foliage turns darker and develops a fine yellow border, but may turn greener in partial shade. Its distinctive columnar shape means that it not only adds colour contrast, but structural interest as well. This eye-catching new form can also be used for hedging.

  • Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. Where some pruning is required, cut back in autumn or winter, after the appearance of the autumn fruits.

This is a beautiful plant and would look perfect anywhere.

I would definitely buy this plant again. The colour fits in many situations. Very easy to look after.

Does this plant develop thorns?

MJ Birmingham

Yes, the stems of this plant do develop thorns.

Can this be planted in containers? I am thinking of using it as screening during the summer months & have planters roughly 1m x 0.5m. Thanks.

Hello, Yes, provided the pots are large enough and the plants are kept well and watered, they should be fine.
