Anthracnose

Anthracnose

Symptoms

Patches or spots of discolouration appear on infected plant tissue. In severe cases the whole plant may die back.

Cause

Various fungi

Harm

In bean anthracnose brown, sunken marks develop on the pods and the leaves may develop a red colouration. Willow anthracnose causes the leaves to curl up, turn yellow and drop off. Raised cankers can occur on the stems and if get too large will girdle the whole stem.

Treatment

For bean anthracnose the whole plant should be removed immediately and don't save the seeds of those plants. Grow resistant cultivars, such as 'Aramis'. For willow anthracnose, rake up the fallen leaves and dispose of them. If cankers have formed then prune them out. Salix x sepulcralis does show some resistance to this disease. For cornus anthracnose, the only treatment appears to be to cut out and destroy affected shoots to the base as soon as the symptoms are seen.
