The common name of this plant refers to the beautifully mottled pink, puple and white, nodding flowers which look like a multi-coloured snake's head. These plants are widely loved and were a favourite in Elizabethan gardens. Their nodding blooms look especially good when planted in large numbers. They will thrive in damp meadows and grassland where the soil never becomes too dry.

  • Garden care:Try to plant the bulbs as early as possible so the roots have a chance to grow before the worst of the winter weather. Plant them in a random clump or drift 10cm deep and 5cm apart and keep them well watered in spring - then dryer in summer.
